Mr. Joseph M. Hendrie Chairman E

Nuclear Regulatory Commission

.F 1717 H Street, N.W.

E ushington, D.C.

20555

Dear Chairman Hendrie:

A proposal to discharge irradiated water from the Three Mile Island plant into the Susquehanna River has come to my attention.

I have heard from a number of constituents who oppose such action, and I would also like to express my strong opposition to any radioactive discharges into the Susquehanna.

As you well know, NRC's failure to take full control 0;f the situation at TMI resulted in the unauthorized dumping of ra.dioactive water at the very time I was inspecting the plant site folliowing the accident.

I was not informed of this, and only learned of what had occurred later, from independent sources.

Given that background, and in view of the serious misgivings which residents in the Three i

Mile Island area have about any additional discharges,

'.I feel it is highly imprudent to proceed with any plan to permit more dumping.

If we have learned anything from TMI, it is that we should not take any safety issues for granted.

Therefore, I respectfully urge that any plans to d-ischarge radioactive water into the Susquehanna be suspended.

I would also g.

appreciate a full explanation of how such plans could be justified e

in the first place.

Your prompt attention to these matters is apprecia.ted.

Please i:

inform me of any decisions.
