WASHINGTON. D 20510 May 25, 1979 Mr. Joseph M. Hendrie Chairman g
Nuclear Regulatory Comission
~
h'ashington, D. C.
20555
Dear Mr. Hendrie:
Recent news accounts have indicated the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is contemplating a request by the Metropolitan Edison
=
Company to treat and subsequently discharge radioactive waste-water from the Three Mile Island plant into the Susquehanna River.
Needless to say, this prospect concerns me because of its potential effects on Chesapeake Bay. As you may know, the Susque-hanna River provides 70 percent of the fresh water entering the Chesapeake, the nation's largest and most productive estuary.
The potential effect of a Three Mile Island discharge or re-lated disposal of the reported 600,000 gallons of water now in a containment building is of direct concern to the residents of Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland who live in and use the imme-diate Bay region.
It is a health concern to even more people who eat the Bay's abundant bluefish, rockfish, crabs, oysters and other delicacies.
I would therefore ask that you provide me with a full report of the contemplated action and alternative courses of action at Three Mile Island and their environmental impacts on the Bay prior to approving any further action with the existing wastewater.
I would further ask that you share that same base data with several other agencies and experts whom I have asked to look into this mat-ter.
They include the Environmental Protection Agency, the Fish and h'ildlife S^rvice of the Department of the Interior, the Susque-hanna River BL a Commission, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chesapeake Bay Mdel, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Chesapeake Research Consortium.
