Dear Friends:
We believe the residents of the Susquehanna River Valley face an extreme long-term health hazard if Three Mile Island Unit II's radioactively contaminated water is du= ped into the river basin. Considering that many incomplete, incon-sistent and conflicting reports have emanated from TMI since the March 29 accident and considering the serious long-term effects of radioactive waste material, we find it i=possible to believe shutting off municipal intake pumps for a few hours, or any other remedial action, will be an adequate precautionary action in the event a dumping takes place.
There are significant questions to be raised about all proposals to prepare the water for a " safe" du= ping:
- 1) Dilution of the waste water is no solution - dilution is pollution;
- 2) Experts indicate the ion-exchanger treatment would not re=ove all radio-active materials, specifically - tritium does not respond to this process.
This proposed action for the disposal of TMI waste would only illustrate clearly to everyone the continuing irresponsibility and insensitivity of Met Ed, GPU, the KRC and others responsible for the current operation of TMI.
We strongly oppose the dumping of TMI's radioactive waste or waste water in any fashion into the Susquehanna River and urge that other safer methods be sought for dealing with this serious, unprecedented radioactive waste problem.
Sincerely, L
William Buskirk, Jr.
