FIRE MAIN LEAK!.iE Plant Name:
Beaver Valley Licensee:
Duquesne Light Company Docket No.: 50-334 Project Manager: Wigginton Responsible Branch: ORB #1 Requested Completion Date: September 7, 1979 On two operating plants, the staff is resolving issues concerned with the leakage resulting from the loss of integrity of one fire water main affecting the integrity of a redundant fire water main or other component of the fire system. On July 18, 1979, the Beaver Valley station experienced the loss of integrity of a fire main as discussed in the subject report (Enclosure 1).
Certain information concerning this event would be helpful to resolve this issue.
The specific information we request is identified in Enclosure 2.
We had previously requested this information through the PM.
However, because as of August 29, 1979 the information has not been received and because we will be using this information to resolve issues on other plants. We suggest that the licensee's response be docketed.

DUQUESNE LIGHT COMPANY Beaver Valley Power Station Iust Office Box 4 Shippingport, PA 15077 July 18, 1979 BVPS: JAW:687 Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 Special Report Mr. B. H. Crier, Director of Regulation United States, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406
Dear Mr. Grier:
In accordance with Technical Specifications 3.7.14.1 and 6.9.2, the following Special Report is submitted.
The report was discussed with Mr. D. A. Beckman at 1600 hours0.0185 days
0.444 hours
0.00265 weeks
6.088e-4 months
on July 17, 1979.
On July 17, 1979 at 1430 hours0.0166 days
0.397 hours
0.00236 weeks
5.44115e-4 months
, water wac discovered leaking out of the ground at an area thirty feet south of the intake structure. At 1441 hours0.0167 days
0.4 hours
0.00238 weeks
5.483005e-4 months
, the diesel driven fire pump was secured becaus, 'f pump overheating due to pump runout. At that time the water leak stopped.. it was cetermined one of the redundant fire suppression headers was the source of the leak. At 1500 hours0.0174 days
0.417 hours
0.00248 weeks
5.7075e-4 months
, the leaking header was isolated and fire system pressure was restored at 1512 hours0.0175 days
0.42 hours
0.0025 weeks
5.75316e-4 months
.
Normal system pressure was verified around the fire suppression system loop and all air was vented from the system. The diesel driven fire pump operating surveillance test was performed successfully at 0930 hours0.0108 days
0.258 hours
0.00154 weeks
3.53865e-4 months
on July 18 and the pump was returned to service.
The source of the leakage is apparently an expansion joint in the fire line.
The area around the leak will be excavated and the necessary repairs will be completed.
This letter is intended to serve as the 14-day followup report. However, if additional information becomes available as a result of the repairs, a followup report will be issued.

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BEAVER VALLEY UNIT 1 SPECIAL REPORT BVPS: JAW:687 DOCKET NO. 50-334
- 1. Was an alarm sounded in the control room to indicate the fire pump was running and if so at what time did it occur? How long before the pump was shutoff.
- 2. What was the cause of overheating of the pump?
e.g., was it insufficient cooling as a result of low pump discharge pressure due to high pump ficws or was it due to pump overload?
- 3. What was the flow and discharge pressure at the time the pump was shutdown? What is the rating of the pump in terms of flow and discharge pressure?
- 4. What is the largest demand for a fire area in the plant for the fire water system?
- 5. Was there any washout of the piping foundation?
If so, describe?
