Suite 3100 Atlanta, Georgia 30303
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
This letter is to supplement our response to Item 6 of IE Bulletin 79-13 which was sent to you in my letter dated July 26, 1979.
Paragraph with heading " Item 1.a:" should be replaced with the follow-ing:
Item 1.a:
Radiography of nozzle to reducer welds was performed after May, 1979 but prior to IE Bulletin 79-13.
The radiography technique used therefore contained one procedural diff erence f rom that specified in the bulletin.
A larger penetrameter, a twenty-five (25) with IT sensitivity, was used instead of the fifteen (15) penetrameter with 2T sensitivity specified by the bulletin. After discussing the technique used with Westinghouse and other utility representatives at an EPRI meeting in Chicago and based on a good sharp 1T hole being visable on the radiographs, Alabama Power Company's level III is convinced the seus.tivity of our radiographs is sufficient to detect the cracking problems located in the nozzle to reducer welds and adjacent base metal.
It should be noted that using the twenty-five (25) penetrameter with 1T sensitivity produces a hole of twenty-five (25) thousandths compared with a thirty (30) thousandths hole when using the fif tei-n (15) penetrameter with 2T sensitivity.
Also the first sentence of the paragraph with heading " Item 2.a:"
should be changed to read as follows:
Radiography of the feedwater system was performed in accordance with the 1977 edition of ASME Section Ill, Subsection NC, Article NC-5000 and the bulletin using a fif teen (15) penetrameter with 2T sensitivity with 3860SO W Yb 790 Olg gyy1 ggt g.,
8 Mr. James P. O'Reilly PAGE 2 August 27, 1979 the exception of the reducer to piping elbow welds which were filmed using a seventeen (17) penetrameter with 2T sensitivity.
Yours very truly, F. L. Claytok, Jr.
