ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 SERVICE WATER INTAKE STRUCTURE 50.55 (e)
W.O. #57300-957_ JOB E-5590 On June 20, 1979, we submitted our letter QA-1148 to your office, identifying a silting condition which had been dis-covered in the river pump house intake flume and intake structure.
We have evaluated the cause of this condition and have determined that it was influenced to a large extent by various seasonal river conditions.
bulkhead between September,1976 and March,1978.The river entranc During the period of September, 1976 through April 24, 1979, there were two (2) long duration flood stages of the Ohio River which were the apparent cause of much of the collection of sedimentation in the intake flume.
The service water pumps were not in operation during most of this period and as the river increased in elevation and subsequently returned to pool stage, in suspension was deposited within the intake flume behind thethe silt normally held bulkhead.
A thorough inspection of the intake flume and the service water pump bay was conducted and a significant mmount of sedi-mentation was discovered.
We are presently in the process of removing this sedimentation and anticipate that during. normal plant operation similar circumstances will not result in a com-parable sedimentation condition.
Also, during operation of the plant, a sedimentation monitoring program will -be implemented to assure that excess sedimentation is not accumulated in the intake.
