REGARDIf!G CANCER INCIDENCE NEAR ROCKY FLATS As we reported prev.ously (RHSB Information Report #2), Dr. Carl Johnson of the Jefferson County (Colorado) Health Department has determined that incidence rates for cancers of the lung, nasal passages, and larynx, as well as for leukemia are elevated in direct association with plutonium concentrations in the soil in areas near the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant.
NRC, EPA, and NCI reviewed his first draft, finding substantial errors that might invalidate his conclusions. The second draft of the report, in which he attempted to correct some of these deficiencies, was sent to OSD consultants for review.
Their comments have now been received and transmitted to Dr. Johnson.
One reviewer, Dr. Daniel Kleitman of M.I.T., found "no merit in this paper" and doubted that the author will ever find a way to attack the problem of monitoring plutonium contamination. Dr. Kenneth Rothman of Harvard, believes that Dr. Johnson's findings are " provocative and worthy of more detailed investigation",
but as they stand, reflect pussible confounding by a number of other variables.
This review corresponds closely to that by the Radiological Health Standards Branch. The third reviewer, Dr. Rosalie Bertell, called Dr. Johnson's general design " excellent" and his method " creative", but would not recommend publication of the findings at this time because it seems possible to further clarify both the findings and presentation."
Meanwhile, Dr. Johnson presented his paper to the Sixth International Congress of Radiation Research in May, and is to present it again at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in November.
