Dear Mr. Keppler:

Detroit Edison Response to IE Bulletin No. 79-15 This is in response to your letter on Docket 50-341, dated July 11, 1979, together with IE Bulletin 79-15, which describes major manufacturing deficiencies with deep drafc pumps, when utilized in ECCS and RHR appli-cations where long-term cooling capability is required. Problems with these pumps involved design and workmanship deficiencies which required extensive inspection, replacement of parts and major redesign.

At Fermi 2, no " Deep Draf t" pumps manufactured by Ingersoll-Rand, Bingham-Williamette and Byron-Jackson have been or will be installed in ECCS and RHR applications.

Fermi 2 service water pumps (RHRSW, EESW and DGSW) are vertical turbine pumps manufactured by Goulds, and to date, no problems are identified in Goulds pumps.

If you require any further action by us in this matter, please advise us.

Very truly yours,

. For Edward Hines .
