Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
This is to confirm the telephone call to Mr. Austin Hardin (NRC) by Mr. W. G. Hairston, III at 1450 hours0.0168 days
0.403 hours
0.0024 weeks
5.51725e-4 months
on August 28, 1979.
On August 23, 1979, Westinghouse Electric Corporation submitted a report in accordance with 10 CFR Part 21 identifying a problem with heat sink shorting on certain 7300 series printed circuit (p.c.) cards. On August 24, 1979, Westinghouse notified Alabama Power Company that the Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) 7300 Process I & C racks might contain some of the subject cards. Subsequent inspection of the FNP Unit 1 7300 racks has revealed 23 of the cards, 14 of which (12 NLL and 2 NMD) were located in the protection racks. None of the card heat sinks were touching the card guides, however, on August 28, 1979, the clearances on all but one of the cards were determined to be less than allowed by manufacturing tolerances.
A small possibility exists that vibration from a seismic event could cause card guide rubbing of the card heat sinks.
If such rubbing were to wear through the heat sink anodized coating and a short occurred between the heat sink and card guide, the card calibration would shift. This condition is being reported under the potential applicability of Technical Specification 6.9.1.8.i.
Further details will be provided in a 14 day follow-up report.
Sincerely yours, e.j. n :xw g
