(a)BECo Letter #79-171 dated 8/28/79 (b)IE Bulletin #79-01

Dear Sirs:

Pursuant to the reporting requirements of Re'erence (b), this letter serves to inform you of steps taken by Boston Edison company regarding the unqualified electrical equipment reported in Reference (a).

The following actions are currently in progress:

(1) Operating personnel are being trained with respect to the nature and subsequent potential consequences of the postulated failure of the solenoid valves which actuate the drywell sump effluent isolation valves.

Training is expected to be completed on or about October 6,1979.

(2) Operating personnel are being instructed to take the following interim actions with regard to the drywell effluent isolation valves following a postulated LOCA incident, (a) Monitor isolation valve position indication in the Main Control Room.

(b) Monitor flow integrators to Radwaste Building Receiver Tanks.

(c) Monitor plant airborne activity.

(d) If steps a, b and c above indicate leakage, then isolate instrument air scoply valves and Chemical Waste Receiver Tank inlet valves, as appropriate, to obtain an alternate isolation. The valves required for this alternate isolation are all readily accessible to the oper-ator in the Reactor and Radwaste Buildings.

(3) The appropriate emergency procedures are being revised to reflect the interim operator actions specified in item (2) above.
