Dear Mr. Haig:

Commissioner Gilinsky has requested the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to respond to your letter suggesting the combining of nuclear energy plants with other energy systems.

A proposal has been considered by the Department of Energy to combine a sola'.*

steam plant with an oil-fired steam plant. The oil-fired plant would be used whenever solar energy was not available to power the turbine generator. Such an arrangement, however, is not currently practical for a nuclear plant.

Nuclear plants are designed for generally continuous operation and are not as easily cycled as an oi -fired plant. However, as nuclear technology continues to develop, suggestions such as yours may be found useful.

We appreciate your interest in nuclear technology and wish to thank you for your thoughtful letter.
