SUBJECT:
TRIP REPORT - B&W, LRC On August 9,1979, Mr. C. N. Smith and myself visited the Babcock & Wilcox, Lynchburg Research Center, License No. SNM-778. The purpose of the visit was a plant tour to familiarize ourselves with the facility and to discuss levels of activity. Our principal contact was Mr. A. F. Olsen, License Adminis trator.
- j.,
During the tour, we learned that the critical assembly is currently being y
used to study materials and spacings to permit increased storage capacity of spent fuel pools. The reactor is used as a radiation source f'.r varicus studies. Most of the gloveboxes in the plutonium fabrication line which
.had previously been decommissioned and cleaned to smearable levels of contamination are being filled with foam prior to shipment to Washington.
They will retain a few small stainless steel gloveboxes for possible t.
future work. Some intermittent work is being done on low enriched uranium. The only active area in the facility is the hot cell operation i
3 and its related laboratories. Here they receive irradiated fuel assemblies and remove fuel rods for examination as part of the core surveillance y
program.
j Cne furnace in the low enriched area is used by B&W, C.'lFP for a resintering test on pellets.
i They have a license renewal application in with the following reduced possession limits:
Uranium greater than 20". U-235 4.9 Kg less than 20% U-235 900.0 Kg

U-233 1.0 Kg g g gg

t Mr. Olsen stated that the reason for the reduced possession limit was A
to reduce inspection fees.
I,,
As far as future activity level is concerned, they have no firm contracts for new work. However, they are continuing to look for new work.
