Description of Event

On Augut 14, 1979, during normal power operation, the Containment Inter-mediate Hi Hi Pressure Channel II trip bistable failed in the trip (safe) condition and was declared inoperable.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence The consequences of this event were limited because redundant Intermediate Hi Hi Pressure Channels I and III remained operable to initiate a steamline isolation if required.

Therefore, the public health and safety were not af fected by this event.

This event has no generic implications which might affect Unit 1 and Unit 2 instrumentation.

Cause

A bistable for Containment Intermediate Hi Hi Pressure Channel II failed because a capacitor in card component C-86-2-K shorted.

Inmediate Corrective Action Af ter ensuring that an actual containment intermediate Hi Hi pressure did not exist, a maintenance report was submitted to the Inctrument Department to determine the cause of the bistable trip.

The unrk perf orced was to replace the card containing the af fected bistable and calibrating the new c,rd.

The associated loop was then functionally tested and channel returned to normal.

Scheduled Corrective Action No scheduled corrective actions required.

Actions Taken To Prevent Recurrence No further actions required.
