May 17, 1979 FOR IMMEDI ATE RELEASE THREE MILE ISLAND, PENNSYLVANI A -- The Met ropol i tan Edison Company has reported to the NRC Staff that a second measurement, made late on May 16, of the depth of water inside the Three Mile Island Unit 2 containment building, has shown aoproximately six feet of water, or about 600,000 gallons, on the floor of the building.

The first reasurement, made the day before, and giving results of 3 feet and 600,000 gallons, was in error.

The error apparently esulted from the use of an incorrect selection of height re'erence at the location in the auxiliary building used to make the easurement.

Direct access to the floor of th! containment is not yet possible because of the water and radiation levels.

The height reference was a pipe in a room that was believed to have been a known distance above the containment floor level.

It was later determined that the oipe was two feet higher than had been thought.

These measurements employing a kind of water level gauge (a helse gauge) will continue to be *ade at intervals to keep t rack of the water level.

Leakage of 700 to 1,000 gallons of water per day into the containment may increase the water level by a frzct ion of an inch each day, MI O,2 5
