Dear Senator Hatfield:

As you requested in your letter of May 1, 1979, we will be pleased to provide you with advance information pertaining to the movement of radioactive waste resulting from the Three Mile Island, Unit 2 (TMI-2) accident.

Information on the contents, type of packaging, transport company and the final destination will be provided for TMI-2 radioactive waste material moving into or through the States of Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Under current regulations, licensees are not required to provide the NRC with advance notification of such shipments of radioactive waste material.

However, during the recovery operations at Three Mile Island Unit 2, the NRC has established an office at the Three Mile Island site, and through this office, we are monitoring the preparation of each waste container and are independently measuring the associated radiation levels to ensure that the licensee's program for complying with NRC requirements is effectively implemented. Acccrdingly, we will be obtaining information on the shipments of radioactive waste material from the site, and will gladly provide this information to your office.

In addition, we intend to provide advance notifications to, among others, the representatives of each State through which the TMI-2 waste shipments will be moved.
