MEMORANDUM FOR: Victor Stelle FROM:

George H. Smith

SUBJECT:

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF TMI - 2 RELEASES Measurements of radiation and radioactive material in the environment around TMI have been made by the NRC, Metropolitan Edison, the EPA, DOE, FDA and State of Pennsylvania. These measurements have included TLD's for dircct radiation, and air, milk, water, soil and vegetation f or adioactive contamination.

To date no individual offsite appears to have received an external exposure to radiation or radioactive material in excess of USNRC regulatory limits or the dose limit recommendations of the Inter-national Commission on Radiological Protecticci.

Some iodine - 131 has been observed in milk, air and vegetation samples. Although a few grab air samples taken at points of highest calculated concentration have shown concentration levels above the maximum permissible concentration for brief periods of time, average offsite airborne concentrations have been a few percent of the maximum permissible concentration. To date the internal exposure from iodine-131 has amounted to a small fraction of the external exposure.

No long lived radioactivrimaterial has been detected in environmental samples as a result of this incident.
