08FICE OF THE CCW.U SSIO N E R August 9, 1979 The Honorable James B.

Hunt, Jr.

Governor of North Carolina Raleigh, North Carolina 27611

Dear Governor Hunt:

When we talked at the Governors' Conference in Louisville in July, I promised to provide you with an NRC staff assessment of our licensees ' management capabilities, in particular those of the utilities operating or constructing nuclear plants in North Carolina.

Because the assessment is delayed, I feel that I owe you a status report.

The evaluations will be based in part on information on management and technical resources provided by our licensees.

The information from utilities with plants in North Carolina, Carolina Power and Light (Brunswick Units 1 and 2) and Duke Power Company, which has operating plants in South Carolina and plants under construction in North Carolina, originally due on July 31, is now expected by the middle of this month.

I will see that you receive a copy of the staff evaluation as socn as it is available and would be pleased to arrange a briefing for you on the report.

Sincerely, s

nv6
