Dear Mr. McCorkle:
The General Electric Company is planning to ship a total of approximately 50 kg.
of U-235 from its Vallecitos Nuclear Center, located near Pleasanton, California, to the Idaho Engineering Laboratory at Idaho Falls. The uranium is fully enriched (33% U-235) and is in the fann of unirradiated General Electric Test Reactor (GETR) fuel elements (118), GETR pool fission capsules (159), and sputtering target discs (2). The fuel elements are to be packaged in DOE-0wned Experimental Test Reactor (ETR) fuel shipping containers and the remaining items in 55-gallon steel drums in accordance with NRC and D0T packaging and shipping requirements.
Trans-Nuclear, Inc. is presently making arrangements for us with Tri-State Motor Transit for transport of this material as a single secured shipment in accordance with NRC safeguards requirements.
It is our understanding that NRC must conduct a survey of the route to be taken by the transport vehicle prior to initiation of such a shipment. We, therefore, re-quest that the survey be conducted for a route from VNC to the Idaho Engineering Laboratory. We have been informed by Trans-Nuclear that they and Tri-State have verbally communicated to you details of the proposed shipping route.
We are presently scheduling the shipment for the week of August 27th.
Your co-operation in expiditing the survey prior to that time will ease the strain on all concerned, including NRC Regions IV and V.
If you should need additional information or have any questions, please let me know.
Sincerely.
