2J510 April ?, 1979 Chairman Joseph M. Hendrie Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H Street, N.W.

Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Chairman Hendrie:

While I can find little to praise in the continuing events surrounding the nuclear accident at the Three Mile Islano plant this past week, I do want to commend the work of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Congressional Liaison staff.

My Chief Legislative Assistant, Richard Arenberg, has been mon-itoring the situation from my office throughout the period.

He has been able to keep well informed regarding the status of the situation at various points throughout the crisis.

He has in-formed me of the excellent cooperation, candid a,d forthcoming assistance of the Congressional Liaison office at NRC, particu-larly the <;ork of Ed Fay, Steve Kent, Spiros Porggites, and Randy Piae.

These individuals should be ccamended.

The provision of clear and prompt information to Congressional committees and Members, and the assurance of the protection of the public's right to know are critical in an emergency of this nature.

While I will withhold judgement of the general perform-ance of the NRC and the licensee in this regard until I have had the opportunity to study the record, my own experience leads me to conclude that the Congre.ssional Liaison staf f in particular has done a superior job.

'I Sincerely,,

L'.
