Pendrie, Chairran f:uclear Reculatory Comission 1717 H Street N.U.
Washington P.C. 2C555 n ear "r.
Cnair an, In view of tFe recent incident at the 'ree !'ile Island nuclear facility in Dennsylvaria, it is eccarent that the 00-tertial for si-ilar accidents evists elsewner t'uclear elents e
engir.eered Fv Sabcock and Milcox would see-in earticuler to v:arrar.t close exa-ination.
T"e Rancho Seco nuclear facility, coereted by the Sec-rarento "unicioal Utility District, lies within ny Congress-ional district.
At ycu right iracine, rany of ny constituents are concerned, confused, and frightened by what happened in Pennsylvania, ?nd are asking if a sirilar accident night not occur at Rancho Seco.
In addition to the saftty reports v;hich you have asked all Babcock and Wilcox olants to submit within a ten-day per-iod, I therefore resoectfully urge that you order your staff to conduct a complete and thorouch investicatior of the con-structier., orodedures, and coerations at tne Dancho Secc fac-ility.
Although sucq an investigation :Hculd focus on areas and systems similar to those that failed c* Three "ile Island, it should also be wide-ranging in nature.
For axamole. there is evidence that Rancho Seco's cooling towers do not reet with federal earthquake standards the electrical systems within the olant have been judged to be faulty in some instances.
I would aporeciate your recorting back to me at your earliest convenience.
Given the uncertainty that now exists, it is irocrtant that we know as soon as cossible if operations ray safely continue, or if Rancho Secn should Ec shut dov;n until the ouestions raised by Three Mile Island are answered.
Sir.cerely, W
