COMMITTEE ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WASHINGTON, D.C.

20515 April 4, 1979 The President The White Hot se Washington, D.

C.

Mr. President:

We want to' congratulate yoa on going to Three-Mile to the situation there. - responsible tone with respect Island, and for setting a As you prepare your upcc.ning statement on energy, we believe that it is vitally important that you take the leadership in reassuring the people of the United States that nuclear energy is safe, and that we must move forward aggressively with our light w2.ter reactor program.

The sensational aspects of press and media coverage of the Three-Mile Island accident, along with irresponsible statements by some political and media figures, pose a critical threat to this country.

We believe that the tone you set with respect to the light water reactor prograr can make the decisive difference in the success of this country's energy policies and programs.

Of course we agree that the Three.'lile Island accident emphasi2cs the need for very careful review cf all existing and future nuclear plants.

We can benefit frem the lessons learned from the accident, and make all nuclear plants even more safe than they already are.

However, this should be done in such a way as to not interrupt or delay our nuclear energy production program.

We support the conceat that we must emphasize energy conservation, along with production of energy from clean coal products and nuclear fission, and, in the future, from other energy sources.

Altbough we must move forward 19 - 4 on.L u d EJ

W Page two aggressively with both energy conservation and production, we face an inevitable debate with respect to almost eve;y aspect of energy policy.

You can set the tone now for a rational discussion, especially with respect to the safety and the future of nuclear energy.

We wish you well, and we will support you in this endeavor.

Sincerely,

/

-L DrW' Q John Wydler, M.C.
