July 15, 2019 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Public Meeting Summary

Title:

Summary of Teleconference Between Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Florida Power & Light to Discuss the Current Status and Use of the L-31E Canal at Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Units 3 and 4 Date: June 27, 2019 Time: 2:00 PM ET Location: Teleconference

Participants:

Butch Burton - NRC Bill Ford - NRC Rick Orthen - FPL Danielle Hall - FPL Scott Burns - FPL Summary: The purpose of the phone call was to clarify for the NRC the past and current use of the L-31E canal. The canal, located west of the cooling canal system (CCS),

dead ends south of SW 344th St., and dead ends when it encounters Card Sound Road. It is normally a nonflowing surface water body, however, during very wet periods when there is too much water west of the L-31E canal; a control structure allows water in the L-31E canal to flow into Card Sound via the S-20 canal. This control structure is no longer used. Instead weirs (notches) that penetrate the L-31E canal levees are used. These weirs are located along a northeast-southwest section of the L-31E canal near Card Sound Road. During the very wet periods, water is allowed to flow from (1) the L-31E canal and (2) the Model lands west of the L-31E canal, to flow across the land surface towards Little Card Sound.
