VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 3 AND 4 RESPONSE TO REQUEST SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE TO BULLETIN 2012-01, DESIGN VULNERABILITY IN ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEM

Dear Mr. Klecha:

By letter dated August 29, 2018 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML18242A012), Southern Nuclear Operating Company notified the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of a revision to the commitment completion dates for analysis and modifications to detect an open phase condition for Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (VEGP) Units 3 and 4. This was in response to NRC Bulletin 2012-01, Design Vulnerability in Electric Power System, which was issued on July 27, 2012. You have revised the dates to the end of the second maintenance/refueling outage for both units.

The staff reviewed the information that you have provided. Considering that the open phase issue is not an immediate safety concern, the staff has determined that it is acceptable to delay commitments made to meet the Bulletin 2012-01 recommendations until the end of the second refueling outages for VEGP Units 3 and 4.
