UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 May 8, 2019 MEMORANDUM TO: Brian E. Thomas, Director Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research FROM: Thomas H. Boyce, Chief /RA/

Regulatory Guidance and Generic Issues Branch Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

RESULTS OF PERIODIC REVIEW OF REGULATORY GUIDE (RG) 1.122, REV. 1 This memorandum documents the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) periodic review of RG 1.122, Rev. 1, Development of Floor Design Response Spectra for Seismic Design of Floor Supported Equipment or Components. The RG provides guidance on design response spectra as input to the design of floor supported equipment or components. It was last revised in 1978. As discussed in Management Directive 6.6 Regulatory Guides, the NRC staff reviews regulatory guides approximately every 10 years to ensure that the RGs continue to provide useful guidance. Documentation of the staffs review is enclosed.

Based on the results of the periodic review, the staff concludes that no changes to RG 1.122, Rev. 1 are warranted at this time. However, the staff identified some technical or regulatory issues in the review that could warrant addressing in a future revision. To address the issues, the staff plans to conduct a review of the more recent developments in determination of floor response spectra available since issuance of RG 1.122, Rev.1 in 1978.

This will involve reviewing licensing documents (safety evaluation reports and requests for additional information), relevant sections of industry standards, and staff guidance documents, to document the current state of knowledge. This activity would start in FY2020 or FY2021 depending on funding limitations and staff priorities, and would be completed in approximately 1 year. The results would inform a decision whether to revise RG 1.122 in the future.
