PUBLIC SUBMISSION As of: 5/3/19 8:10 AM Received: May 02, 2019 Status: Pending_Post Tracking No. 1k3-99oj-6jwu Comments Due: May 20, 2019 Submission Type: Web Docket: NRC-2018-0101 Turkey Point Nuclear Plant Units 3 and 4 Comment On: NRC-2018-0101-0034 Florida Power & Light Company; Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Unit Nos. 3 and 4 Document: NRC-2018-0101-DRAFT-0033 Comment on FR Doc # 2019-06612 Submitter Information Name: Anonymous Anonymous Submitter's Representative: Barbara Pierce and Diane Lockwood Organization: League of Women Voters of Miami Dade County General Comment LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF MIAMI DADE STATEMENT AT MAY 1, 2019 NRC HEARING IN HOMESTEAD, FL:
The League of Women Voters of Miami Dade County, together with other community leaders, has been following FPLs persistent attempts to renew its permit to operate its Turkey Point cooling canals for more than two years now. We are deeply concerned by the environmental and economic impact these cooling canals are having on Biscayne Bay and on Biscayne Aquifer, Miami-Dades only source of drinking water.
Even more concerning is FPLs apparent lack of concern for the health and welfare of the community and its own customers.
Turkey Point's cooling canal system has been leaking nutrient-rich, hypersaline water into surrounding waters for over 30 years, dumping 3 million pounds of salt per day into Biscayne Bay and Biscayne Aquifer. As a result, 80 percent of Biscayne Bay seagrass and 50 percent of Biscayne Aquifer have been destroyed.
FPL Turkey Point has now applied for a permit renewal that will add another 30 years to their right to pollute the waters of South Florida. It is estimated that if FPL Turkey Point continues operation of its cooling canals, our drinking water supply will be unusable within five to twenty years.
FPL is requesting permission from that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to renew a nuclear facility that is antiquated and highly vulnerable to sea level rise and storm surge. FPL clearly has access to sounder, safer, more sustainable methods to provide electricity to our community, but it will not adopt them voluntarily.
