Dear Mr. Johnson:
I have enclosed a copy of the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Commissions Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (NRC/RES) and the U.S. Department of Energys Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE/NE), last renewed in 2014, on Cooperative Nuclear Safety Research. The MOU, which was specified to remain in force for a period of 5 years, will expire on May 1, 2019.
This MOU was developed through collaboration between the staff of NRC/RES and your DOE/NE staff. Our two organizations have worked well together over many years, and I believe the cooperation has been mutually beneficial. We look forward to many more successful years for this partnership. The NRC proposes to work toward renewing the MOU, and in the meantime, requests to extend the effective period of the current MOU by one year.
Please reply with your approval to extend the effective date of the current MOU at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Nicholas Difrancesco of my staff at 301-415-1115.
