This is to notify you that we are considering the modification of our spent fuel storage facilities at the Surry Power Station, Unit Nos. 1 and 2.
As you are aware, delays in bringing fuel processing plants on-line has resulted in a lack of storage space for spent fuel.
The prognosis for bringing the fuel processing plants on stream is not good and it appears that the most feasible solution is to increase the storage capacity of our existing pool.
We plan to accomplish this objective by replacing the existing racks with higher density racks.
Depending on the rack design chosen, this will approximately double the present capacity.
Before proceeding with the detailed engineering for the modification, we would like to meet with members of the Regulatory Staff to discuss the proposed modification and, specifically, to review the design criteria for the modification.
If it is satisfactory to you, we would like to meet during the week of June 14-18, 1976.
Our present fuel loading schedule indicates that our pool will be full by February 1978.
In order to assure the satisfactory completion of the modification by this date, it is necessary that we proceed with the project in the very near future.
If you have any questions regarding the proposed modification prior.to our meeting, we would be pleased to address them.
