VIRGINIA ELECTRIC ANQ POWER COMPANY, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA 23261 May 16, 1975 Mr. Norman C. Moseley, Director Serial No. 503/041575 Office of Inspection and Enforcement LQA/RWO:cel Region II U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 230 Peachtree Street, NW Suite 818 Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Re: IE:II:NCM 50-280/7 5-05 50-281/75-05

Dear Mr. Moseley:

We have reviewed your letter and the attached Bulletin No. 75-05, dated April 14; 1975:, and have completed our review of the des.ign and installa-tion of the hydraulic restraint system in our operating station, Surry Unit 1 and 2.

  • The suppressors at the Surry Power Station are des.igned to with-stand and operate while subjected to assumed horizontal and vertical acceleration values of 0.17g and O.Ug, respectively. However, the equip-ment is capable of withstanding twice these acceleration values without loss of structural integrity or function.

Prior to shipment of these suppressors, the supplier performed several tests on the equipment. The completely assembled flow resistor was given a 6000 psi hydrostatic pressure test and a hydraulic flow test which simulated the operating condition and the accident condition. These tests were performed at varying temperatures, between 600F and 120°F, and also reverse flow. All welds, which conform to Section rx*of the ASME Code for Unfired Pressure.Vessels, were completely X-rayed.

Vepco has recently established a periodic test for suppressors and other pipe supports. This periodic test provides a check of the general condition of the suppressor, oil level, presence of leakage, and support connections.

e e SHEET NO. 2 VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY TO Mr. Norman C. Moseley We intend to continue our present visual inspection program as outlined above. In addition, we plan to inform.*you by June 14, 1975 of our review of the suppressors to be used in our nuclear units now under construc-tion.

Very truly yours, z};, m. vfiacl.,,~}~
