Agenda X Purpose of Todays Meeting X Scope of Proposed Alternative X Technical Basis (Public)

X Precedents X Time Frame X Questions 2

Purpose X South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company intends to submit an inservice inspection alternative request in 2019 for the use of a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composite repair system for internal structural upgrade of selected safety related piping systems.

X Todays meeting serves as a pre-submittal discussion of the scope and content of the forthcoming alternative request.

3

Scope of Proposed Alternative Request X Piping included: Essential Cooling Water piping X Requested date of approval: January 2020 X American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Class: ASME Code Class 3 4

Scope of Proposed Alternative Request X Applicable Code Edition and Addenda X ASME Section XI, Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant Components, 2004 Edition No Addenda X Reason for Request X The use of CFRP composite repair on piping for ASME applications is a recent technology improvement for aluminum bronze piping during a repair/replacement activity. STPNOC is therefore submitting an ISI Alternative Request for NRC approval to use CFRP material for the repair of pipe sections.

5

Technical Basis X NEI Template for Relief Requests X Material Inspection and Controls X Design Approach for CFRP Lining X CFRP installation requirements X Examination and Testing X In-service Inspection 6

Precedents X Surry Power Station Units 1 and 2 were approved for an inservice inspection alternative request to use CFRP composite repair system for internal structural upgrades of safety related piping.

X Differences between the Surry and STP submittals 7

Time Frame X STP Relief Request submittal - estimated July 2019 X Requested approval date from the NRC - January 2020 8
