UNIT 1 OCTOBER 1 OCTOBER 26 OCTOBER 31 UNIT 2 OCTOBER 1 OCTOBER 31 This reporting period begins with the unit at cold shutdown (CSD) and defueled for steam generator (S/G) replacement. At 0200 the clocks were set back one hour to conform with eastern standard time. This reporting period ends with the unit CSD and defueled for S/G replacement. This reporting period begins with the unit at 100% power. This reporting period ends with the unit at 100% power.

  • AHEHDUENTS TO FACILITY LICENSE OR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIOHS OCTOBER,.1980 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued, on August 29, 1980,.Amendment No. 60 to the Operating Licenses for Surry Power Station Units No. 1 and No.
2.

The changes correct the inadvertent omission of language allowing the possession of byproduct material, as revised by amendments to the Surry licen-ses dated October 31, 1974. Of significance, paragraphs 2.D and 2.E of the Surry Unit No. 1 and No. 2 Operating Licenses are amended to read as follows: D. Pursuant to the Act and 10 CFR Parts 30, 40 and 70, to receive, possess and use in amounts as required any byproduct, source or special nuclear material without restriction to chemical or physi-cal form, for sample analysis or instrument calibration or associa-ted with radioactive apparatus or components; E. Pursuant to the Act 10 CFR Parts 30 and 70, to possess, but not separate, such byproduct and special nuclear materials as may be produced by the operation of the facility."

Design Changes D/C 78-10

  • FACILITY CHANGES REQUIRrnG NRC APPROVAL OCTOBER, 1980 None during this reporting period.

FACILITY CHAHGES THAT DID NOT REQUIRE NRC APPROVAL Condensate Polishing Addition Portions of this design change involving yard Fire Piping (78-lOC), Instrument Erection (78-lOM), Demineralizer Bypass (78-lONR), and Condensate Polisher 4160V Tie In (78-lORO were implemented. Surmnary of Safety Evaluation This design change neither constitutes.an. unreviewed safety question ncr requires a change to Technical Specification. D/C 78-21-D Condensate Tube Cleaning This modification includes using smaller cleaning balls in the Amertap system, modifying the circuitry, modifying the elbows, etc. Surmnary of Safety Evalu<Uion The system is being rebuilt to original design criteria creating no new affect to the operation of safety related equipment. D/C 78-32 Main Transformer Over Excitation Protection This change installed an STV relay designed to protect the main trans-formers from over excitation. Basically it assures the voltage does not increase beyond design limits. Surmnary of Safety Evaluation Unit 1,2

2 This design change will not impact adversely on station operations or safety related equipment, but will enhance the present safety protection. D/C 79-48 RTD Relocation and Installation This design change replaces the presently installed RTD's with ones newly calibrated, relocating them and four new ones with computer points. 2

  • Facility Changes That Did Not Require NRC Approval (Continued)

Design Changes D/C 79-48 Summary of Safety Evaluation Containment integrity was not affected and no safety implications were created with this design change. D/C 79-49 ILRT Air Pressurization System This modification provides for installing a temporary containment air pressurization system for the type A ILRT. Swmnary of Safety Evaluation Since this system is to be installed only during the test and the unit is shutdown at the time, there is no effect on Tech. Spe~s. D/C 80-06 Replacing Westinghouse BFD Relays in Safety Related Systems Because of a fallibility of the BFD relays initially installed in the engineered safeguards system they were replaced with ones which are designed to give improved performance. Summary of Safety Evaluation By replacing these relays, system reliability has been improved with no adverse affects to the overall safety of the system. D/C 80-S36 Short Term Containment Atmosphere Sampling System This modification will provide a temporary post accident sampling system for containment air to be used until a more permanent facility is installed. ST 52 ~ ~ T~TS AJ~D EXPERUlENTS REQUIRING NRC AP PROV AL OCTOBER, 1980 None during this reporting period. TEST AND EXPERIM:EHTS THAr DID NOT REQUIRE NRC APPROVAL Reactor Coolant System Flov.' Measurement Data Test was completed on October 2, 1980. This test obtained sufficient data to provide on accurate detennination of reactor coolant system loop flow. ST 60 The Reactor Coolant Pump Terminal Voltage Test was October 10, 1980. This test measured the terminal related parameters of lB Reactor Coolant Pump. ST 68 completed on voltage and The Heat Tracing Panel Performance Test was completed on October 10, 1980. This test is performed to verify that the heat tracing panel responds as required and to relate line numbers and circuit numbers. ST 102 Steam Generator Auxiliary Feedwater Pump (2-FW-P-2) 48 hour test was completed on October 16, 1980. This test demonstrated the operability of the stea!I! generator auxiliary feedwater pump and booster pump. UNIT 2 1 1,2 2

~ ~ DESCRIPTION OF ALL INSTANCES WHERE THEID1AL DISCHARGE LHHTS WERE EXCEEDED OCTOBER, 1980 Due to impairment of the circulating water system on the following days the thermal discharge limits were exceeded as noted. Unit 1 Inservice Inspection is in progress. To date the inspection has been satisfactory with no major indications identified.

A magnetic particle inspection was completed on Unit 1 H. P. rotor and blade rings. A magnetic particle, ultrasonic and liquid pene-trant inspection is in progress on all miscellaneous parts and equipment associated with Unit 1 turbine.

3.

Completed a radiographic and ultrasonic inspection of Unit 1 main feed water 16" X 14" piping reducer welds. No indications were noted. Completed a radiographic inspectiol). of the base metal 14" downstream of the auxiliary feed water tie-ins on the main feed water piping. No indications were noted.
