Dear Mr. Goller:

In our letter of July 22, 1975, Serial No. 571, we advised the Conunission of our plans concerning the modifications to be made to certain portions of the emergency core cooling systems of Unit Nos. 1 and 2 at the Surry Power Station.

The purpose of this letter is to advise you of the status of the subject changes.

As indicated previously in the aforementioned letter and in discussions with the Regulatory Staff, we plan to install redundant flow paths to the suction of the low head safety injection pumps to assure that the single fail-ure criteria established by the Conunission is satisfied.

The necessary engi-neering to accomplish this objective has essentially been completed.

However, because of physical constraints and unacceptable installation time of our initial approach, we are pursuing an alternate method to accomplish the same objective; i.e. redundant flow *paths.

Specifically, we are now contemplating installing a redundant pipeline to the bottom of the valve pit and locating the valves and check valves in an area above the valve pit which is much more accessible and has less restrictive space limitations.

As indicated in all our discussions with the Commission, and in our let-ters, we indicated that material availability and delivery was expected to be a problem and that planning to complete the modification during the upcoming re-fueling during October 1975 was optimistic.

Our architect~engineer has *reviewed material availability and we are not able to secure the necessary material to assure completion during.the scheduled Unit No. 1 refueling.

We are continuing our efforts to secure material for the Unit No. 2 refueling scheduled for April 1976.

We plan to continue the interim measures the Commission established until such time the subject modifications are completed. We shall continue to keep you 1\\'?,28 p:
