e RICHMOND,VIHGINIA 23261 December 6, 1977 Mr. Edson G. Case,Acting Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Conunission Washington, D. C.
- 20555 Attention:
Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 4
Dear Mr. Case:
Serial No.
PO&M/WWC :wbh.
Docket* Nos.. 50_;280 50-281 50-338 50-339 License Nos. DPR-32 DPR-37 Construction Permit Nos. CPPR-77 CPPR-78 In accordance with the provisions stated in 10CFR20.103(e) the Director of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Inspection and Enforcement Office of Region 2 was notified that respiratory protective equipment usage under the provisions specified in 10CFR20.103 (c) would become effective on December 29, 1977 at the Surry Power Station and upon issuance of the opera-ting license at the North Anna Power Station.
An NRG inspection report, R0:11:WWP, 50-280/74-8 and 50_;280/74-7, revealed an item of non-compliance in that Defense Apparel air hoods being used at the Surry Power Station had not been evaluated for performance nor approved for use by the United States Bureau of Mines.
A later inspection R0:11:MVS, 50_;280/74-10 and 50-280/74-9 indicated that the performance test, which indicated a protection factor of 1000, was satisfactory and the item was closed.
Since the Defense Apparel air hood does not have NIOSH/MESA approval, Virginia Electric and Power Company would like permission to continue using this hood with its demonstrated protection factor of 1000.
cc: Mr. James C. O'Reilly, Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement Very truly yours, C. M. Stallings Vice President-Power Supply and Production Operations i I 7 7 '='47r *
