Dear Mr. Case:

e Serial No. 054 ES/JCW:kbo Docket Nos.

  • 50-280 50-28]

License Nos. DPR-32 DPR-37 This is to inf6rm you of the recent history and current status of the SurryPower.Station fixed.temperature monitoring system in.the James River.

As noted in our letter.of February 9, 1977',*most of.the.monitoring equipment was lost due to unusual adverse weather conditions and ice.* We *advised also that the system was to be reactivated as soon as repair or replacement of monitoring equipment had been completed and as soon as river conditions per-mitted.

  • Since several of the stationary towers in the river were lost in January, buoy/anchor attachments had to be devised and installed for mounting the appropriate iristrumentation.

Installation of the system was completed in June, 1977.

These instruments, which record water temperature on film, are re-trieved every 2-3 months~

During each servicing run it has been observed that one or more of the instruments have been lost* to the hostile environment that exists in the James River.

Also~ film jamming or other instrument malfunction from time to time results in 1 imited data loss~* Replacements are made as soon as equipment is available and weather conditions permit.

Therefore, there is some data l9ss at certain locations within the network; data loss up to three moriths duration.

On the recent January service date, it was noted that several instru-ments had been lost due to ice conditions in the river.

New mountings were devised and all instrumentation was replaced eleven days later when* weather conditions permitted.

Consequently, there was a network-wide data loss of e 1 even days.
