SUMMER INTERNSHIP REPORT, THE APPLICABILITY OF HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEERING ANALYSES IN RETAIL STORES This memorandum transmits the final report (Enclosure) The Applicability of Human Factors Engineering Analysis in Retail Stores, produced by Jack Horton, an unpaid, NRC high school intern. The report documented Mr. Hortons research work conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Jing Xing, Sr. Human Performance Engineer, Human Factors and Reliability Branch, Division of Risk Analysis, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research. Mr. Horton studied the applicability of the NRCs Human Factors Engineering Review Model (NUREG-0711) to a retail store and performed detailed human factors and reliability analysis of the stores operations. Dr.
Xing reviewed the report and concluded that the report contained materials demonstrating the broad applicability of the NRCs human factors engineering review guidance and proposed a number of good practices for applying the guidelines. If you have any questions about the report, please contact me.
