Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Park Place Newark, N.J. 07101 Phone 201/622-7000 Mr. James Po O'Reilly, Director U.S. Nuclear Reg~latory Commission Office of Inspection and Enforceme~t Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

NRC IE CIRCULAR 76-02 "RELAY FAILURES -

WESTINGHOUSE BF ( ac) AND BFD (de) RELAYS" NO. 2 UNIT SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION November 9, 1976 Pursuant to NRC IE Circular 76-02 received August 23, 1976 we offer the following:

BF (ac) Type Relays Presently there are no BF (ac) type relays used on Unit No. 2.

It should be noted however, that the Radiation Monitoring System for Salem No. 2 Unit has yet to be procured.

PSE&G Engineering is cognizant of NRC _Circular 76-02, and a review of proposed Radiation Monitoring System designs should preclude the application of BF (ac) type relays.

BFD (de) Type Relays PSE&G Engineering has conducted a review of Class lE equipment for Salem No. 2 Unit and has determined that nine (9) BFD (de) relays were supplied by the NSSS Supplier in the Liquid Waste Disposal System.

The Energy People 95-2001 300M 10-74

Mr. J. P. O'Reilly 11 76 PSE&G Engineering Department has initiated DCR-ED-0009 to replace the BFD relays in the LWD system with Struthers-Dunn Type 219-DXBF relays, which have been ordered.

It is anticipated that this change will be completed by January, 1977.

If you require additional information, we will be pleased to discuss it with you.

Director, I & E Washington, D. C.

Very truly yours,
