This is in reply to your letter enclosing a letter from Hrs. Louise Toal of Woodbury He.ighta, New Jersey, which was referred to us by the Depart-ment of Defense.
The two-unit Salem nuclear power* plaµt is presently being built on Artificial Isfa.nd in Lower. Allowa.ya Creek 'fownsh:I.p, Salem County, New Jersey~ under construction per~its iosued by the Atomic Energy Commission on September 25 9 1968.
The AEC's procedur.ef;l for rev:i.ewing the Publtc Service Electric and Gas Company's appiications.for this plant, as well as AEGrs continuing surveillance over the*plant during its lifetime, are described in*the enclosed booklet 11L:.tcensing of Power Reactors.n A description of the* plant is included in *the (>..UClosed Safety Evaluation, pt'epared by AEC Is Division of Reactor Licensing prior to issuance of the construction permits.
Nuclear power plants in the United States are uoually built by electric utilit:tes.
