/DELAWARI SAFE ENERGY COALITION Mr. Joseph Hendrie Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.c.* 20555

Dear Mr. Hendrie:

June 7, 1979 P. 0. BOX 45:31 NE\\NARK, OELA\\NARe 19711 The recent damage done to the 28 fuel rod assemblies at the Salem I nuclear power plant, and the far more serious damage dis-covered to the control rods, have caused Delaware residents consi-derable concern over the safety of the Salem I plant.

Yet to date no explanation has been confirmed as to the cause for such damage, and whether or not such a cause has been remedied.

The Delaware Safe Energy Coalition respectfully*requests that the ~~RC not allow the Salem I nuclear plant to open until a complste investigation has been completed, and the true reason for the damage is knovm, and the situation has been corrected so as to insure the safety of this plant. It is inconceivable that the NRG would ever allow this plant to open until all the facts are knovm, and the facts must be known.

The recent correspondence from Delaware's Governor and congressional delegation serve notice to the NRG that it cannot shirk its responsibility.

Should efforts to resolve this latest problem be inadequate, we are prepared to ask our congressional aelegation to introduce special legislation to keep Salem I shut until they are satisfied that it is safe.

cc: Governor DuPont Governor Byrne Senator Biden Senator Roth Congressman Evans Yours sincerely, E~ef">~
