20555 Gentlemen:
c 0 p y EMERGENCY EVACUATION PLAN - SALEM, N.. J.
This morning our local radio station WJIC Mayor Fogg, of Lower Alloway Creek told listener the Emergency Evacuation Plan for Lower Alloway Creek is not workable in its present form and is being held up by the Defense Department.
I don't know if this means Federal or State Defense Department.
- With Salem 1 Nuclear Facility in the process* of fueling and testing, I find the existing situation incredible.
How can this facility be allowed to proceed with anything before a COMPLETED, TRIED and WORKABLE plan is available?
-what happens in Lower Alloway Creek very*much affects many people, including the area where I live. Mayor Fogg also stated this morning the Salem County
'Emergency Evacuation Pl an was not workable either. This is very interesting in light of the fact that Mr. Crescenzi (Salem County Freeholder) stated on
- WJIC as well as in a recent public meeting that the Evacuation Plan was completed and would be distributed to those interested as soon as he reviewed it. *Then I heard he made another statement - although I'm not sure where - that he was not entirely satisfied with the plan.
For some time the people of Salem County have questioned the whereabouts of *this plan.
At this point I feel we have a right to be told the truth.
Mayor Fogg also mentioned a recent meeting at Oyster Creek dealing with this problem.
His statement made me wonder if Oyster Creek has a workable evacuation plan.
Do you know? If so has it ever been tried? I am curious because if the.facility at Oyster Creek is operating without a WORKABLE plan, this -
would, naturally, set a precedent and Salem 1 might feel they too have the right to operate without one.
I feel as long as nuclear plants are being built and allowed to operate, public officials on all levels should make the SAFE evacuation of people a priority concern *.
.I am very tired of hearing "nothing will ever happen.
11 Human error as well.as -
equipment failure is always possible.
Attached is a copy of a news article that appeared in this morning's issue of Th~
Morning News, Wilmington, belaware which bears this out.
l am also interested in knowing where in the United States there is a WORKABLE Emergency Evacuation Plan in existance.
Can you provide me with this information?-
Very truly yours, Eleanor C. Coleman Attach.
c 0 p y COPY - Wilmington, Delaware 28-76 200 EVACUATED IN N-PLANT FIRE.
Oak Ridge, Tenn. (AP) - About 200 workers at Union Carbide's nuclear weapons plant were evacuated yesterday when fire broke out in a machine area, officials said.
No injuries were reported, but officials of Union Carbide's Nuclear Divisions which operates the so-called Yl2 weapons facility for the Energy Research Development Administration, said employees subjected to smoke from the fire were given medical tests at the facility.
Officials said the employes were checked for inhalation of smoke, which might have contained traces of beryllium or uranium.
Officials said the fire in the ductwork was at 9:35 a.m. EDT and was*
extinguished by a sprinkler system.
The cause was not immediately determined.*
