UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 January 25, 2019 MEMORANDUM TO: Brian E. Thomas, Director Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research FROM: Thomas H. Boyce, Chief /RA/

Regulatory Guidance and Generic Issues Branch Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

RESULTS OF PERIODIC REVIEW OF REGULATORY GUIDE (RG) 1.105 This memorandum documents the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) periodic review of Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.105, Revision 3, Set Points for Safety-Related Instrumentation, which was issued in 1999. This RG addresses the selection of setpoints for automatic actuation of safety functions in nuclear power plants. ANSI/ISA 67.04.01-2018, Setpoints for Nuclear Safety-Related Instrumentation, was recently released and is currently under review by the NRC staff as it relates to this RG. As discussed in Management Directive 6.6, Regulatory Guides, the NRC staff reviews RGs approximately every 10 years to ensure that the RGs continue to provide useful guidance. Documentation of the NRC staff review is enclosed.

Based on the results of the periodic review, the staff concludes that a revision to RG 1.105 Revision 3 is warranted. The staff will review ANSI/ISA 67.04.01-2018 and develop a new draft revision of RG 1.105 for public comment. The NRC plans to develop the draft RG by the end of June 2019, and issue the draft RG for public comment by the end of December 2019.
