REVIEW OF THE UPDATED DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR THE RENEWAL OF THE THREE MILE ISLAND UNIT 2 INDEPENDENT SPENT FUEL STORAGE INSTALLATION IN BUTTE COUNTY, IDAHO (DOCKET NUMBER: 72-0020)
Dear Mr. Clough:
Enclosed is a hard copy of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRCs) updated draft environmental assessment (EA) in support of the NRC staffs review of the U.S. Department of Energy Idaho Operations Offices (DOE-IDs) application for the license renewal of the Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) independent spent fuel storage installation (ISFSI). The draft EA evaluates the environmental impacts of an additional 20 years of the TMI-2 ISFSI operation as requested by DOE-ID, and has been updated to include an assessment of the impacts from a hypothetical terrorist attack on the ISFSI.
The NRC is requesting the Idaho Department of Environmental Qualitys (IDEQs) review and comment of the revised draft EA. Please submit any comments you may have within 30 days of the receipt of this letter to ATTN: Ms. Cinthya I. Román, Chief, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 11555 Rockville Pike, Mail Stop T-4B16, Rockville, Maryland 20852. Your comments will be addressed in the final EA and finding of no significant impact (FONSI), which will be noticed in the Federal Register.
The enclosed updated draft EA and FONSI are not publically available and is limited for use by the staff of the IDEQ and should not be disclosed without prior NRC permission.
Documents transmitted herewith contain Sensitive-Internal Information. When separated from the sensitive conditions in enclosure 1, this document is decontrolled.
