Radioactive waste emits hazardous radiation for ten half-lives. Radioactive isotopes of iodine have a half-life of 16 million years; plutonium 24,000 years; cesium 2.3 million years.
Interim Storage Partners proposes a pilot interim high-level waste repository stroing 40,000 tons of high-level radioactive waste in Andrews, Texas. My fear is this radioactive dumping site will become a dangerous, open, permanent parking-lot radioactive dump.
Radio-active waste should not be transported twice. Deadly high-level radioactive waste from nuclear reactors around the country would travel by rail through our major cities and be dumped on Texas, with plans for a similar site in New Mexico. Transporting the waste will require thousands of rail shipments, occurring over 20 years. Each shipment at risk for accidents, sabotage and terrorism.
Until a long-term, geological, safe repository, is complete, utilities are responsible for their own interim storage problems, including financial investments and liability for accidents.
The NRC should halt review of the WCS license application for Consolidated Interim Storage in Texas, and halt the review of the Holtec project proposed for New Mexico. Both licenses should be denied.
