SUMMARY
OF DECEMBER 13, 2018, PUBLIC MEETING WITH THE NUCLEAR UTILITY GROUP ON EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION REGARDING RESOLUTION OF QUESTIONS IDENTIFIED DURING THE CONDUCT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION INSPECTIONS On December 13, 2018, a Category 2 public meeting was held with representatives from the Nuclear Utility Group on Equipment Qualification (NUGEQ) and other reactor licensees at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Headquarters Office at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. No regulatory decisions were made during this meeting.
The purpose of the meeting was to provide feedback to NUGEQ and members of the public on the Agencys resolutions to Inspector questions (Questions and Answers( Q&A)) resulting from NRCs Design Bases Assurance inspections on Environmental Qualification (EQ). Following the discussion of the Q&A, the staff informed the constituents that the Q&A will inform the inspection procedure, and that the staff will now shift its focus to support the regions in dispositioning findings from the EQ inspections. The meeting notice and agenda, dated November 30, 2018, are available in Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No.ML18351A023. A list of attendees is provided as Enclosure 1.
The NRC staff began the meeting by discussing background information concerning the progress of the environmental qualification program inspections, the genesis of the inspector questions, and the process developed to answer the inspector questions. The staff also summarized the various meetings that were previously held with NUGEQ. The answers to the inspector questions were presented to NUGEQ and other industry representatives in a slide presentation which is appended to this memorandum. Throughout the NRC presentation, the NUGEQ representatives provided comments regarding the information contained in the slides. Much of the comments involved how to capture the information contained in the slides in current ongoing EQ inspection procedures and how lessons-learned from this inspection activity could be included in future engineering program inspection initiatives that are under development by the NRC.
