Dear NRC,
I am writing as an economic Geologist to voice my objection to licensing Interim storsge Partners LLC,Orano, WCS and any combination of high level nuclear waste storage in eastern New Mexico and western Texas. There are a few hundred thousand people employed by oil extraction industries in Texas. In west Texas, Midland, Andrews, Seminole, Kermit, Monahans, Pecos and Ft. Stockton. If there is an accidental spill, tens of thousands of people and families may be out of work for years as a spill is cleaned up.
This makes the number of workers employed by the nuclear disposal industries pale in comparison. We understand that the number of workers at WCS will be about 250, certainly not more than 400. We also know from reading the background information on nuclear accidents that one is likely to occur in every 10,000 shipments. Whether the spill will be during the first month, the 6th month or the 100th month we do not know. But a spill is likely to occur sometime during the 50-75 years of the projected life of the high level nuclear waste disposal. This would imperil Americas oil production and consequently energy national security.
I am concerned that a change in the original intent of power plants licensing, to store high level nuclear waste in place until a national permanent repository is open, is a foolish exercise meant to enrich a few while putting national oil security in jeopardy and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people. Please DO NOT MOVE FORWARD WITH LICENSING ANY OF THESE HIGH LEVEL NUCLEAR WASTE TEMPORARY STORAGE SITES.
