Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commission,
I am writing to urge you to reject the proposal by Waste Control Specialists and its partner to import up to 40,000 tons of high-level radioactive waste from nuclear reactors around the United States for storage in Andrews County. This plan is dangerous: exposure to this waste is known to cause cancers, genetic damage, birth defects, and even death.
Homeowners will be helpless, because home insurance doesnt cover radioactive contamination. Bringing high-level radioactive waste to this area would create risks to public health, safety and financial well-being from transport and storage.
There has not been enough time for public input and broad education about this dangerous plan. Public meetings should be held in all of the locations through which you propose to send these dangerous waste materials.
The WCS Environmental Report is inadequate. Improved monitoring, security and worker protections are needed, and the emergency plan should include emergency actions to be taken in the event of an accident, not just a notification structure.
