October 15, 2018 MEMORANDUM TO: Louise Lund, Director Division of Licensing Projects Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation FROM: Brian E. Thomas, Director /RA Christopher M. Regan for/

Division of Engineering Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

GENERIC ISSUE MANAGEMENT CONTROL SYSTEM REPORT FOR THE SECOND HALF OF FISCAL YEAR 2018 Enclosed for your information is the Generic Issue Management Control System report for the second half of fiscal year 2018, covering the period from April 2018 through September 2018.

The Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research is addressing this report of active generic issues (GIs) to the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) because NRR is implementing the three active GIs. This report is also being provided to the other regulatory offices for information.

The enclosure summarizes the status, activities, and expected final completion dates associated with each of these GIs. The following describes the significant activities that occurred during this reporting period for each of the three active GIs:

  • GI-191, Assessment of Debris Accumulation on PWR Sump Performance The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received a closure letter from the licensee for Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant on August 14, 2018, in response to Generic Letter 2004-02, Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation during Design Basis Accidents at Pressurized-Water Reactors, dated September 13, 2004.
  • GI-199, Implications of Updated Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Estimates in Central and Eastern United States on Existing Plants The NRC staff completed reviews of the spent fuel pool high-hazard reports for North Anna Power Station and Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. With these reviews finished, the NRC staff has completed reviews of the spent fuel pool low- and high-hazard reports for all licensed plants.

The NRC staff completed staff reviews of the seismic probabilistic risk assessment reports for Watts Bar Nuclear Plant and Beaver Valley Power Station.

  • GI-204, Flooding of Nuclear Power Plant Sites Following Upstream Dam Failure The NRC staff received focused evaluations from the licensees for Palisades Nuclear Plant and Brunswick Steam Electric Plant for the staff's review.

More detailed information on each GI may be found on the Generic Issues Dashboard, an online platform that displays detailed information associated with each active GI. The dashboard is located on the NRCs internal Web site at http://gid.nrc.gov/Planning and on the NRCs external Web site at https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/regulatory/gen-issues/dashboard.html.
