SUMMARY

OF CLOSED MEETING TO DISCUSS WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY ACCIDENT TOLERANT FUEL LICENSING PLAN On September 18, 2018, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff met with Westinghouse Electric Company (Westinghouse) to discuss the accident tolerant fuel (ATF) concepts Westinghouse is pursuing, including doped UO2 fuel pellets, chromium coated zirconium cladding, uranium silicide fuel pellets, and silicon carbide fuel rod cladding. For each concept, Westinghouse provided an overview of the design, potential safety benefits, current experience and knowledge base, licensing approach, and schedule. Westinghouse also discussed their thoughts on the use of advanced modelling and simulation in the licensing process, advancements in on-line data collection, and the ATF phenomena identification and ranking table strategy outlined in the NRCs ATF project plan. A key accomplishment of the meeting was a commitment from Westinghouse to schedule discussions with the NRC staff on their draft fuel qualification plans in the near future. This commitment marks a substantive step in the implementation of the ATF project plan.
