Dear NRC Commissioners,
New Mexico is not the nation's dumping ground, in spite of what a small, misguided, money-grubbing group of people in the southwestern part of the state believe. For Holtec to bring up to 100,000 metric tons of spent fuel, high-level radioactive waste, from nuclear reactors around the country to southeast New Mexico would be a disaster for our state and could prove disastrous for the country. The people will NOT stand for this.
Hauling up to 10,000 canisters of radioactive waste, via rail, through communities across the country, then across our state and then burying on a 1,000-acre desert plot is a ridiculous idea. This rail route passes near the Carlsbad sinkhole location, which is already a threat to the health and well-being of that community. Families in Carlsbad can't afford to compound the threat of the sinkhole by allowing Holtec to add transport of nuclear waste to the equation.
As you know, NM has already taken too many hits from the nuclear industry. This is one too many.
No HOLTEC!!
On behalf of the people, wildlife and water of New Mexico, please reject Holtec's proposal.
