[External_Sender] Docket ID NRC-2018-0052 I am writing to express my deep concern about the plan to transport many tons of highly radioactive fuel across the country. I believe this puts at risk untold numbers of humans, animals, watersheds, forests, and much more.
I live in Westchester NY and I am not far from the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. Those of us who live here are quite concerned about the plant's decommissioning and what will be done with the radioactive waste. It seems clear that transporting it across the country is a terrible and dangerous idea. More specifically, the Holtec plan seems to target majority Hispanic communities in areas that have already been badly polluted by toxic fossil fuel. I find this shocking and appalling.
Additionally the NRC seems to be complicit in the hiding of specific detailed routes proposed for carting the toxic materials. The public has a right to much more transparency. The NRC should have environmental scoping public comment sessions around the country, in all regions through which the tainted materials will pass.
I am deeply concerned and puzzled why all the high risks involved in this project are being taken? They do not benefit public health, safety, security, or environmental protectionin fact, they are detrimental to all of these. I worry that it is to transfer title, liability, costs, and risks for the highly radioactive irradiated nuclear fuel from the companies that generated it and profited from it onto the shoulders of federal taxpayers.
These plans should be scrapped immediately!
