Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commission Staff:
There is a far better alternative to the removal, transport and temporary storage of irradiated material from our nuclear power plants, namely, developing on-site long-term, non-corrosive, above-ground dry cask storage.
Over the life of the radioactive waste, an annual or bi-annual inspection process, carried out by licensed staff, results in a public document certifying that the containment structure is sound. These reports can be summarized and communicated to the surrounding communities via public utility bills.
Local radioactive waste management is a much better alternative than trying to transport it across our country to a mammoth temporary or permanent waste storage facility. Our roads and railways, our rivers, lakes and aquifers, our meadows, fields, and farms will not be subject to such unnecessary risks.
