50-250, 50-251, and 50-335 Cavit Annulus Seal Rin The following information is provided in response to your letter of February 2,
1978:
The reactor cavity annulus seal ring is not left in place during normal operation and there is no biological shielding installed in the reactor cavity annulus at St. Lucie Unit 1 or Turkey Point. Units 3 and 4.
Neutron shielding is scheduled to be installed in the reactor vessel cavity at St. Lucie Unit 1 during the Spring 1978 re-fueling outage.
The potential for missiles following a postulated pipe break within the cavity was considered in the shielding design and is discussed in our Neutron Shielding Report dated November 29, 1976 (L-76-406).
The report shows that the energy of potential missiles is insufficient. to cause damage to control element drive mechanisms and justifies operation with the proposed shielding installed.
